I know what you are thinking: What the heck is a hash tag? Some of you tweeters may already know, but this term is pretty foreign to most! A hashtag is a term we use in the world of Twitter. It looks like this: #. Yes, a pound sign…a very powerful pound sign! If you are not using this in your social media efforts, it is time to start. Believe it or not, the hashtag can boost your insurance marketing success. Let’s take a look…

What is the point?

Hashtags are used in front of words- but not just any words. Let’s say you are posting a link to your insurance blog about health insurance. You write the topic, add the link and just send it along. This will be seen by all your followers. However, don’t you want to world to see your blog? If you hashtag #insurance, you are reaching ANYONE who is searching/posting for insurance. Want to get specific? You can hashtag #healthinsurance. The point: to reach the masses by branding your tweet with a topic.

How does it help?

Think about it: your blog post will not only be seen by your followers, but outsiders in the #insurance sphere. This way, you may gain more followers with similar interests and even be retweeted to others! This is a great way to put your business out into the social media world. The more you seem to pop up in these groups, the more exposure your small business will receive.

Don’t overdo it.

Yes, once you are on board with hashtags you are most likely going to want to tag everything. DON’T. Use them sparingly and only hashtag the word you are really focusing on.
