As an insurance agency in a digital age, you must keep up with the ever changing internet and its functions. Recently, social media giant Facebook announced its newest upgrade. It is called “Graph Search”. If this is your first time hearing about it, there are some things you should know about this tool.

Facebook’s Graph Search will allow you to search your friends’ profiles and feeds for various types of information. This will all be based on what they have shared with you. As opposed to web search, the Graph Search takes place within Facebook.com and only uses information from the website.

The results found from your search will appear in a graph form. Prior to this tool, searching Facebook for a specific piece of information may have been difficult due to navigating multiple pages or not finding an exact match. But now, searching within the social network has become much easier and more organized.

So what does this mean for your insurance agency? Here are some ideas to consider:

  • People who search for things on the web are usually looking to buy something. With your specific customer base, you can now find people searching or interested in insurance. This can you’re your business not only on regular search engines, but on Facebook too.
  • Graph Search will likely offer an opportunity to advertise next to search results, similar to Google or the other search engines. So when this happens, take advantage.
  • When you enter in a search term, a drop-down menu asks you what kinds of results you are looking for. This includes categories such as people, places, pages, products, Facebook games, songs friends have listened to, and more.
  • Everything made public to share on a user’s page will appear, such as page likes, any information entered in the profile, check-ins, photos, etc.

Facebook Graph Search takes into account privacy settings on each piece of information, so only selected information to share will be indexed. As with all previous Facebook rollouts, like Facebook Timeline, everyone will eventually have access to Graph Search. So take initiative to learn more about this tool by signing up to be a beta tester today!

  1. This is interesting. I think Facebook’s intention of this search is for things like restaurants and other places that your friends have been to and “liked”.
However, I understand your point and I don’t see any reason why this wouldn’t work in the insurance industry as well. It’s certainly an exciting possibility anyway!
I just “liked” this post so the ball is already rolling……..

    • Yes, the intention is for businesses such as restaurants to be noticed and shared by friends. But why can’t insurance fall under this category too? Independent insurance agencies should be connecting with their community on a regular basis to understand their needs, etc. If you are interested in learning more about how insurance can be more “social”, take a look at our past blog posts on this site. Thanks for “liking” the post, I appreciate it!

  2. Interesting post. I think the same way businesses whether it’s restaurants, coffee shops etc, can be shared and liked, I think insurance agencies can also reap some of the same benefits from being more “social”.

    • Yes you are right, insurance agencies should be leveraging this tool to become visible to their clients. Thanks for commenting!
