Innovative ways to say thanks

Building and maintaining client relationships is an essential part of your business, and sometimes it’s the small things that make the biggest difference. Your clients should always know that you are grateful for their business. Luckily, saying “thank you” is a simple yet impactful way to show your appreciation. The following provides some easy, creative ways to say thanks, not only following a purchase or renewal, but all year round.

  1. Personal notes: When is the last time you received a hand-written note from someone thanking you? In this fast-paced, highly digital age, taking the time to pen a personal note makes a great impression, whether you’re thanking a client for a new purchase, a referral, or just for trusting you with their business.
  2. Note from the CEO: Along the same lines, a personal note from your agency’s CEO will be well-received by your clients. Knowing that the CEO takes the time to thank them creates an even more favorable impression of your agency.
  3. Thank your prospects: Any time you meet or present to a prospect, send a follow-up note. Something as simple as “Thank you for the opportunity to present for you” could be that extra point of differentiation when the prospect decides who to hire. Even if a prospect has rejected your pitch, follow up with a note thanking them for their time and consideration. They’ll remember the next time they consider switching brokers.
  4. Say “thank you”: This may seem obvious, but after every client or prospect meeting, shake the individual’s hand and say “thank you… (for meeting with me/for your time/for trusting me with your business/etc.)” Call them by name and make eye contact. Be sincere, even if the meeting didn’t go as smoothly as you’d hoped.
  5. Greeting cards: Sending greeting cards to prospects and clients throughout the year is an effective way to remind them that they are important to you. The trick here is to think outside the box. Don’t send a card only at Christmas; you will be one of many. Send cards out for other holidays or events, whether it’s the Fourth of July, Daylight Savings, Thanksgiving or the first day of spring.
  6. Invitations: Your top clients are invaluable to your business, and they should know that they are special to you. Spending time together in a social setting can take your relationship to another level. Invite them to lunch, sporting events, charity functions or other gatherings where you can spend time together.
  7. Small gifts: Little gestures can go a long way. Thoughtful gifts may include flowers, books, candy, a tray of cookies, catered lunch to their office, gift cards and much more. And while these gifts can be great for birthdays or holidays, they’re much more meaningful when done “just because.” (Disclaimer: Certain companies have strong policies against receiving gifts; when in doubt, find out the company’s policy first.)
  8. Reverse referrals: Your clients help you grow your business, so why not help them grow theirs? You know just how valuable referrals can be; look for ways to refer business to your clients.
  9. Recognize life events: If you know a client is getting married, having a baby, being promoted or is enjoying another major life event, send a card with your congratulations.
  10. Offer great service: Perhaps the best way to thank a client is by always offering high-quality service. Be as accessible as possible, always return telephone calls and e-mails promptly, and treat every client like he/she is your most valuable one.
