In 2010, Google officially launched an update to their search functionality called “Google Autocomplete.” Google Autocomplete was an update from an earlier functionality called Google Suggest. The Autocomplete update presented a whole new functionality – automatic queries and automatic results.

Google’s introduction of Autocomplete stems back to their intent, which has always been the same: to provide users with the most valuable and relevant results to their search queries (keyword searches). By adding Autocomplete, Google aimed to further help people reach their appropriate search destination. It’s almost as if Google wanted its users to feel like they knew what they were thinking, that they could finish your query for you and produce the results ahead of time.

So how can you use this for content generation? Start searching! Whereas the Google AdWords Keyword Tool can give you search volume on more broad-level keywords (like “Los Angeles Auto Insurance”), Google Autocomplete can show you popular related queries including your keywords.

For example, if you’re looking to target customers in Los Angeles looking for auto insurance, start searching for it and see what comes up:

What you’ll find is that, in this instance, people using these keywords in their search queries are also looking for quotes, rates, and companies. Why not write a blog post about how those in Los Angeles can obtain auto insurance quotes?

For another example, if you’re located in Boston, MA and looking to target new customers in the area, why not see how they might be searching for agents/agencies?

What you’ll find, in this instance, is that people using the keywords “Boston ma insurance” along with the start of agency/agents, “ag,” are looking for a variety of keyword variations. If you have the carriers/market to sell to the South Boston area, why not write a blog post about having insurance agents to serve South Boston MA? Why not target those in South Boston on Facebook and Twitter?

For your blog posts that are focused on the community, and not your insurance products, why not look at what people are searching for in relation to a big event? For example, if you’re an agency in Rhode Island, how about looking at what people are searching for in regard to the upcoming Newport Folk Festival?

From these suggestions, you could decide to write about the festival’s lineup. Talk about the big acts that will be there, how to make sure you’re properly insured for traveling to the festival, the liabilities you should be aware of, etc. Even within in a community based post you can find something to bring back to insurance.

Give using Google Autocomplete a try the next time you’re planning out your content calendar – with some creative thinking, you’ll be surprised how easily the keyword suggestions can help you!
