Link Building For Your Agency: Internal Linking (Pt. 2)

Last month, we discussed getting links from other sites as it relates your agency’s marketing and SEO strategy. But internal linking, linking within your site pages, can also help prove that you’re a legitimate source of information on the web. Adding links to your pages can give your readers a better context for what you’re talking about, and prove to them that you’re an authority on the subject.

Here are some tips to enact an internal linking strategy and use it to your advantage:

Link your landing pages together when appropriate. If, for example, your home insurance page happens to mention that you also offer umbrella coverage, insert a hyperlink to the umbrella insurance page if you have one. If a customer who needs more than one type of coverage visits your website, this can make it easy for them to quickly find what they need, and make it easy for you to get conversions (and cross-sell opportunities!). If you’ve developed a sizable catalog of blog posts, you may have written one in the past that applies to the current subject you’re addressing; link to it to drive additional traffic to your site.

Make sure you only link to credible sources. If you used any kind of statistics or references from the Internet, it’s always good practice to link to it. First, make sure the place you’re linking to is credible, such as any kind of government source or industry professional website or blog. Not Credible: sites with the domain “.biz,” sensational gossip sites like TMZ, or completely unrelated pages. For example, a blog post about a community carnival probably shouldn’t include a link to your personal muscle car photo gallery.

Make sure to control yourself. Even if you’re linking to related material from trusted sources, loading up your content with links can come off as cluttered and unprofessional. According to a video posted by Google’s Head of Webspam Matt Cutts, Google doesn’t have an exact cutoff for number of links in a single page, but you should avoid adding so many links that it discourages users or makes your page look spammy.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this edition of link building tips for your agency. With a little practice, you too can become a web marketing master!
