Are you worried about the proper protocol when it comes to social media etiquette? Because social networks are so large and encompass so much information, it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint what to do or what to post in certain situations. This blog has touched upon the subject of social media etiquette before, but we’re here today to add a supplemental entry to make sure you’re doing everything you can to stay between the lines on Facebook, Twitter, etc. The following are some additional social media etiquette rules we all need to abide by:

1. Consult with friends before tagging: For some situations, you just never know. If you’re out at a bar and take a group photo that seems harmless, you still should ask everyone you’re with if it’s okay to tag them in the photo. Some people may not want to be seen where they are, and others simply don’t want their profiles flooded with photos.

2. Try to avoid streamlining your networks: What this is means is you shouldn’t have the same information posting throughout your Facebook and Twitter—keep them separate. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are different platforms that serve different purposes, so posting the same exact information can work against you

3. Don’t make it all about you: While social networks can be personal, they’ve become more about sharing and generating information with others. While it’s definitely okay and normal to fill people on what’s going in your life, you don’t to make it seem like you’re only concerned with yourself.  Ever hear of the term “humble brag?”

4. THINK before you POST: Every time you post something, and we mean every time, take a second think whether or not it’s appropriate for the public or useful for your friends and followers. If you need to second guess yourself, you may want to consider not posting.

This blog is always stressing how much social media platforms are changing and how it’s important for us, as users, to adapt to their changes. As Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn transform the way the way they do things, we must transform the way we use them.
