Brokers can support clients at risk for inspection with proactive safety resources

Milwaukee, WI – June 12, 2014

In 2014, for the first time in the history of OSHA’s Site-Specific Targeting (SST) Program, employers will not be given any advance warning prior to being inspected. To fill this void and help employers assess their risk of inspection, Zywave has released the 2014 Potential OSHA Inspection List.

The 2014 Potential OSHA Inspection List contains the names and addresses of thousands of establishments that meet OSHA’s criteria for inspection in 2014 under the SST Program.

In past years, OSHA sent out letters to establishments targeted under the SST Program, warning them of a potential inspection. This gave targeted employers a chance to proactively address problem areas and avoid costly penalties for violations, but according to multiple OSHA representatives, there will be no letters sent out this year.

Although OSHA is not providing warning letters this year, the SST Inspection Program will continue as usual. Because OSHA publishes its criteria for selecting establishments for the primary and secondary inspection lists, Zywave was able to apply the inspection criteria to publicly available employer databases to create a list of employers that meet OSHA’s published criteria for inclusion on either the primary or secondary inspection list.

What criteria did OSHA use to select inspection targets in 2014?

OSHA set a list of criteria, and establishments included on Zywave’s Potential OSHA Inspection List met one or more of these:

  • Establishments that received a warning letter from OSHA in 2011 because of a high DART rate
  • Manufacturing establishments with a 2011 DART rate at or above 5.0 or a DAFWII case rate at or above 4.0
  • Non-manufacturing establishments (except for nursing and personal care facilities) with a 2011 DART rate at or above 15.0 or a DAFWII rate at or above 5.0

OSHA outlined separate criteria for states with OSHA-approved state plans (Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont):

  • Manufacturing establishments with a 2011 DART rate at or above 7.0 or a DAFWII case rate at or above 5.0
  • Non-manufacturing establishments (except for nursing and personal care facilities) with a 2011 DART rate at or above 15.0 or a DAFWII rate at or above 14.0

Zywave’s 2014 Potential OSHA Inspection List is available exclusively to our network of brokers and can be used to target clients and prospects on the Potential Inspection List and provide proactive safety and risk management solutions, enhancing the value of the broker partnership.
